A single shoot day in your home can pay more than a week of short-term rental. Yet most owners have no idea their space has value to film, television, and advertising productions. Here is what you can reasonably expect.
Ranges by type of space
The amount depends first on the nature of your space. As a guide, here is what productions pay per shoot day in Canada:
- Homes (houses, condos, lofts): $500 to $2,000 per day.
- Commercial spaces (restaurants, offices, warehouses): $1,500 to $5,000 per day.
- Exceptional venues (heritage buildings, unique properties): $8,000 and up per day.
- Outdoor spaces and lots: $500 to $2,500 per day.
These figures are for a full shoot day. A project often books the same location for several consecutive days, and prep or strike days are usually billed as well.
What makes the number move
Two neighbouring houses are not necessarily worth the same to a production. The factors that matter most:
- The type of production. A national commercial or an international series has a larger budget than a student short or an independent music video.
- Duration and exclusivity. A shoot that ties up your space for five days, or requires exclusive access, pays more than a scene lasting a few hours.
- The constraints imposed. Moving furniture, shooting overnight, hosting a large crew: every requirement carries value.
- The character of the place. This is not about luxury. An authentic kitchen, a bright living room, or a facade that tells a story is often more sought after than a prestige property.
That last point surprises many owners. Productions are not looking for perfect sets. They are looking for believable places that fit a story.
Revenue from a space that sits empty anyway
The appeal of a filming location comes down to arithmetic. Four shoot days in a typical Canadian home generate revenue comparable to roughly six months of average residential rent. For a property you already live in, or that sits empty part of the time, this income is added without you having to move anything permanent.
Every booking made through Locloc is governed by a signed contract that sets out each party’s responsibilities. You approve each project, set your own conditions, and stay in control of what happens in your space.
How to estimate what your space is worth
The simplest approach is to look at the ranges above and place your space by its type, location, and character. To go further, browse the city pages in our directory of filming locations across Canada, which break down revenue by region and by location type.
When you are ready, list your property on the waitlist. Registration is free and carries no obligation, and the first to register get priority at launch.
